3 Types of Pneumatic Valves and Their Working Principles

  1. Two-Way Directional Valves

Two-way directional valves are comprised of two ports connected with a passage. The passage of these valves can be opened or closed to regulate the flow of compressed air. The airflow regulation is done by an electrically activated solenoid, which is designed to shift the valve spool or poppet. Once the valve ports are closed, the compressed air will not be able to flow. Air, alternatively, can move through the ports once they are open. These valves have an easy on-off function to interlock, isolate, and connect different system components.

2. Three-Way Directional Valves

Three-way directional valves have three ports connected through passages in a valve body. One of the ports serves as the exhaust exit, while the other one is connected to airflow. The last port is designed to connect the valve to a device like an actuator. Once two of the three ports have been opened, the remaining one will remain closed. During this time, the compressed air will move to the device. The exhaust is then expected to be vented when two different valves have been opened. These valves can be maximised in double-acting cylinders and work with high cyclic applications.

3. Four-Way Directional Valves

Four-way directional valves have four different ports. The first port is designed to be the exhaust pathway of the valves. The second port, alternatively, connects to an airflow that is pressurised. The third and fourth ports, ultimately, are attached to the actuators. What is great about these valves is they can conveniently reverse the motion of cylinders and motors.
